The
good news is that I am hitting the ball further, my
good shots are better and my bad shots are better quality.
The bad news is apparently this doesn't mean you automatically
play better!
Throughout my whole career I have searched every avenue
to improve my ball striking; it was slow progress but
not having this as my strength taught me how to play
golf. It's about the intricacies, feel and clear thinking,
not how good it looks. Technically my swing is better
than ever which is great, but I am having to learn to
get round a golf course a little differently than I
am used to.
Since making the changes in my swing in late February
and winning the Tavistock Cup I have not played a tournament
without a healthy breeze blowing around the links. This
has been tough. As I said earlier, my good shots are
better and do not move the same as they used to which
means I have to take different lines, quite often ones
I'm not comfortable taking. This is all good though
and changes that I needed to make to get to where I
want to be and join the European revolt.
I am getting closer to where my swing is more comfortable
and when it's not quite there I know what I need to
do. The short game is still in good shape but can always
do with work. The same goes for my putting which perhaps
has been neglected a bit due to my swing changes. Something
I will be putting right from now on, pardon the pun!
As if the swing changes weren't enough I have been ill
three times this year at tournaments, most recently
the Thursday morning of the BMW Championship. I am now
starting to get to the bottom of this and it's very
much looking like a combination of some infections and
parasites I picked up last year, possibly from contaminated
water and food. It wasn't the type of souvenir I wanted
to bring back but it seems it was beyond my control
and has led to my having some extensive tests.
It will be nice when I can fully concentrate on my golf
and get back the energy that has been lacking to do
the routines that work for me. I know deep down that
once I can put in the amount of work I normally do with
my routines, then with the changes I can be better than
I ever have been before.
So at the moment I am just enjoying a week away from
golf before heading to Atlanta to do some work with
my coach. Then it will be on to Munich for the BMW International
Open where hopefully I'll have some good news to tell
you about.
Until then, adios!
