WILSON IN MONEY AS GERMANY RUNNER-UP // 30th July 2007

Oliver Wilson picked up the biggest cheque in his career as he finished runner-up in the Deutsche Bank Players' Championship of Europe at Gut Kaden, in Germany.

The 27-year-old Coxmoor professional ended three shots behind Argentina's Andres Romero but level with Denmark's Soren Hansen on 16-under-par to earn £211,000.

Wilson closed with a final round six-under-par 66, based on a storming opening nine holes where he picked up six birdies.

But he was unable to continue that incredible run and with only one more birdie on the homeward nine, he had to be content with joint second place behind Romero, who last week came so close to winning the Open Championship and who continued his stunning form in Germany.

Wilson said: "Fair play to Andres - he's played great golf all week and deserved the win.

"But I was very pleased with the way I played in the final round. I didn't play that well in the third round - to be honest I was pretty bad and had to grind out a score - and I was not overly-confident going out there.

"But I focused on what I had to do and I was not really aware of what was going on around me. It was all about me against the course. When I hit my driver down the middle of the 17th and there was all the TV guys about I sensed I might have a chance but I never really got near enough to Andres.

"I did not play badly down the final stretch but a couple of poor chips on the two par fives cost me. I was pleased with the way I finished on the final hole, getting up and down from 60 yards.

"I can't wait for a break now. I've played six weeks on the trot and this makes it all worthwhile and I can sit back now and assess my goals for the rest of the season.

"I'm desperate for some sunshine, I can't take any more wind and rain," he said. "Before the week I said I was going to take some time off so I put everything I had into this round.

"I can't wait for my holiday and this makes it a lot better. "

Meanwhile, the first prize of £403,510 took Romero's earnings for the fortnight to more than £690,000 and booked his place in this week's WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Akron and the USPGA Championship in Oklahoma.
