Last week was my first week on my
American campaign. I'm over here for
3 months so it was a good start at
the WGC Accenture Matchplay at The
Dove Mountain resort.
Ironically I came all the way over
to America and had an all European
affair to reach the quarter finals
which was one step better than I'd
had last year. I managed to have good
wins over Miguel Angel Jimenez, Rory
McIlroy and Luke Donald who are all
potential Ryder Cup players this year
so that was good from that point of
view.
After a comfortable win over Miguel,
a 3&2, I had two tough matches
to squeeze through on the 20th against
both Rory and Luke. I pulled out some
great shots coming down the stretch
on both and a couple of good shots
to finish my matches. Noticeably my
top shot against Rory on the 20th
and a great putt against Luke on the
20th. The one against Luke in particular,
which was a great match, I managed
to hit a 9 iron stone dead on the
18th in regulation play which I thought
was enough to get me through in time
but unfortunately Luke holed a 50ft
putt; it's always a great lesson for
Matchplay and that's why its so exciting.
So it was nice to get my own back
when I rolled in a 35 footer on the
20th to beat him.
It was really disappointing for me
to go out to Sergio the way I did.
I didn't play that great especially
on the greens. I putted poorly and
put him under no pressure all day
which was a shame but at least its
an overall improvement on last year.
I feel that my game is in good shape,
my swing has been good and the changes
that I made over Christmas have started
to get more engrained. The putting
is not where I want it to be but its
improving as well. I still managed
to putt but just not consistently.
So overall a good week. I finished
early on Saturday so Rich (my caddie)
and I went on a 6 hour road trip to
San Diego to head to Callaway test
centre for some testing on Monday.
We had the weekend hanging out, relaxing
and watched the all English final
with the golf on Sunday.
I am heading to Callaway for club
testing mainly on shafts. My shafts
are a little stiff so want to try
so softer ones, some different combinations
and maybe a new driver head and 3
wood. Also be checking on my wedges.
My wedges are pretty good but I am
interested on experimenting a little
bit. A lot to do before I jump on
a plane on Monday night to Charlotte
where I will be practicing and resting
before I head down to the Honda Classic
in West Palm Beach.
