DIARY // THE OPEN // 20th July 2009

This past week has been great at the British Open with what was comfortably my best ever performance in the event.

I was a little disappointed not to pick up a couple of shots coming down the stretch to beat my best Major finish which was 23rd at the US Open. I played really good all week, tee to green I was very solid and my short game was good, so overall I was very pleased with the whole result. The only slight negative was I didn't hole that many putts. I putted well but they just didn't want to drop.

When you look back and realise you only finished 5 shots out of the playoff you can't help but think how close you could have been. That being said I played very good on Sunday and just missed a couple of chances coming down the stretch which would have given me a top ten. 2 shots better was 7th. I missed a couple of chances which was a shame but that's what happens in Majors, you have to take your chances and I didn't. So a slight disappointment there but all in all it was a great week which gives me a lot of confidence going into my next two tournaments which are the World Event the WGC Bridgestone and the USPGA. After two top 25's in my last two Majors hopefully I can improve my Major record and get a top 10 or even a win so fingers crossed. The main thing is that the game's all in good shape.

It was an amazing British Open to be part of and obviously Tom Watson stole the show. Everyone kind of wanted him to win although it's slightly embarrassing that a guy his age (he's obviously a legend in the game) but a senior player has come along and played better than us. It was a little unfortunate that he didn't go on to win but that takes nothing away from Stewart Cink who did great in the playoff.

It's a shame we didn't get another Major winner over here for Europe and especially for Lee Westwood and Ross Fisher who looked really strong for the English. We are getting closer though, it was a strong European contingent up there this year which shows how strong European golf is.

I've got a 2 week break now where I can relax and do a bit more practice and get ready for the US. I'm currently in Leeds having some scans and tests done at a mid point in the year to see how I've improved since January. Hopefully I'll be able to look back next week at those results and see that I've improved physically which is all good stuff moving forward.
