DIARY // STAYING POSITIVE // 07th June 2010

It's been an up and down couple of weeks. It started in Madrid for the Madrid Masters on a hilly course in good shape. I played pretty steady but made lots of mistakes which I matched with lots of birdies and a few eagles as well. It was very much like a roller coaster but I managed to close with a 65, which landed me a top 10. It was fantastic as positive things started to happen. I made some good putts and lots of birdies, which was great.

I was really excited to get to Wales around the 2010 Ryder Cup course. It's a course I haven't been to in a few years. My last time there it was very wet, soggy and the course wasn't that great. Upon returning this time I was amazed as to how good it was. It's a very strong test with lots of excitement; a tough course in general. I was drawn out with the Ryder Cup Captain Monty and Alvaro Quiros the first two days which was a lot of fun. A little bit of extra pressure but a great opportunity to show him I can play well around that golf course. I played pretty solid the first two days but didn't really hole a lot of putts for birdie. Friday was my first round as a pro where I had 18 straight pars which was very positive that I was playing consistent golf but at the same time the birdies had dried up and I wasn't making the putts I needed to in order to contend. The weekend caught up on me. I was a little tired and my attitude showed that as I was getting frustrated not holing any putts. When I did make mistakes I didn't react to them very well over the weekend whereas in the first two days I reacted a little better and made birdies when I needed to, at least on the first day.

Basically, to analyse the last few weeks there have been a lot of good points; however, the bad point that's showing up is that I'm a little tired and my attitude hasn't been fantastic and that's something I've got to rectify pretty soon because if I don't correct that nothing will change. Maybe I'm doing a little too much at the tournaments, putting in very long days in order to do everything correctly. I've ended up doing things a little more than I would have in the past- in the gym in the morning warming up, physio before I play, warm up at the course, play 18 holes, practice afterwards to warm down, physio again and then gym in the afternoon or evening if I have time which is amounting to 12 hour days and I'm not getting enough rest to counteract that. I think it's highlighted a few things that need to change, putting in a little too much effort, trying to force things to happen instead of staying patient and letting them change naturally. The putter certainly hasn't been as hot as it needs to be. I'm putting and holing out well, I'm just not making anything so I need to do some more putting and get used to the greens each week.

This week I'm going to have time off to rest and recuperate with a few days away from golf. I'll start practising the second half of the week to get in shape for the US Open. I head out Sunday to Pebble Beach which I'm really looking forward to as I've never been there before. I arrive on Sunday so I'll head out to the course and do lots of putting and short game work to get into the feel of the greens and the course which is the key thing around the US Open. Overall the golf swing and fitness are fine. The golf swing isn't as consistent as I want it at the moment but it's definitely better. My bad swings are much better than they've ever been before. I'm playing the same standard as I have been the last few years but the only difference is I'm not getting much out of it right now. There's a lot of positives in there and I've got to keep going and forget about and stop giving in to the frustration. I need to change my attitude and become more positive and keep fighting over every shot. If I can do that then good things will hopefully start to happen over this next stretch which includes a couple of majors and some big tournaments. The great thing about golf is you can turn any bad spell around with one great week and that's what I'll be looking to do over the next few weeks.
