DIARY // END OF SEASON REVIEW // 01st December 2009

Well that's the official 2009 season finished! It's been a good year and one that I feel I have improved in immensely. I feel that technically and physically I am better than I have ever been. My short game has been very good most of the year, it didn't finish quite as well as I wanted it to, but it has highlighted things that I want to improve on, so all in all I am pretty happy with my 7th finish on the Order of Merit Race to Dubai standings. It's an improvement on 11th last season and my World Ranking has stayed in the top 50, I am currently 40th.

It was a year that was very consistent especially since June when I started working with Hugh Marr, my coach. I have been top 25 in every single event and I have only missed the cut once since around that time, which is great. The only down side to that is that I haven't been in contention as much as I would have wanted. That's all part of the game though, when one side is working well the other side diminishes slightly. My strength has always been my short game which hasn't been as sharp, especially during the last month to 6 weeks when I've hit at my best. If I had been at my normal level at short game I feel I would have gone on to contend in most of the events at the end of the year, however that been said its still the long game where I feel I need to improve to contend and to win as much as I want. I feel like I'm on the right track there and the short game certainly won't take long to get back to where it was.

My consistency has shown in the major events this year, it's the first year I've played in all 4 majors and all world golf events and I've had the best cumulative record in the WGC's. By far it was the best year so far for me on the majors too. The Masters was disappointing, I felt that I didn't play well and of course it didn't help that I had my neck injury around that time as it hindered my game. The other 3 majors have been fantastic. On the US and British Open I was a few shots off the lead all the way through but overall finishing not many shots back, ending up being about 20th which was a pity because it really didn't show how well I'd played those weeks.

The PGA wasn't like that at all, I managed to fight with not much game at all that week, and I finished top 25 again. So 3 top 25's wasn't so bad for my first proper year and a good starting point for my first full year playing in the majors... I will look to improve next year.

As I mentioned earlier, this year was my first time working with Hugh Marr, we started in June. I had done 6 months on my own with my golf swing and although I had good results I didn't feel like I had improved overall. Technically I wanted to be more professional and scientific and have more of an Olympic mind set and Hugh has enabled me to do that. We have worked hard since June and hit a lot of balls, really underlying what's going on physically linking the golf swing into the exercise and what I need to do to improve my body to be able to let me swing the club how I want to and gain more distance. That's all happened now and I feel like I am now swinging the club better than I ever have.

So it's off season now and I am already enjoying the weeks off and getting use to the couch again! Just starting to get back into working out but I have 2 months now so the plan at the moment is to go on a skiing holiday somewhere with my girlfriend this side of Christmas. As I won't be playing again until Abu Dhabi, after the holiday we'll just spend time catching up with friends and family.

Just before Christmas then I will start working hard on the golf swing and try and push to improve it with the work that I have done with Hugh. My exercise programme has really helped me this year but again I want to push harder and improve in every area possible especially cardio. It's all hard work but I want to come out all guns blazing in Abu Dhabi!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support again this year. It's really been a great year for me and I hope that next year I can bring some wins to you supporters.
